The companies
- A real estate company that owns and operates 4.56 million square feet in eight states, with more than 700 tenants.
- A construction company building mid-range to high end houses in the greater Boise area.
- A residential excavation company and concrete company that moves dirt, lays foundations and flatwork.
- A cabinet manufacturing company we built ourselves, when we could no longer find anyone who would make cabinets to our standard.
- A precision machine shop making parts for missile and radar systems, spacecraft, medical devices and theme-park rides.
- A growing platform of gyms (12 and growing).
- Three beauty academies training the next round of licensed professionals.
- An up and coming restaurant chain in 2 states (expanding to the third).
- A few other businesses nobody will ever write about, which is part of why we like them.
Two open-ended, evergreen funds sit alongside our real estate and business acquisition engines. The real estate fund is eleven years old, at $285.6 million raised from individuals and families rather than institutions. The business fund is four years old, at $17.2 million raised from the same investors.
Writing
I bought my first stock at eleven and my first rental property at twenty-two. I also lost every dollar I had in the market that same year, which taught me more than the buying did.
I've been wrong plenty since. We didn't see the 2022 rate spike coming. We were built for it, which is a different thing from predicting it.
